NEP2020 — Rising of a Star after 34 years

The NEP2020 (National Education Policy) announced recently was a great move in upgrading the current education system for uplifting the future of our country. The big boost to the system and a landmark change in the history of Indian education after 34 long years !!!

History of National Education Policy :

1968–1st Education Policy (During the government of Indira Gandhi)

1986–2nd Education Policy — (During the government of Rajiv Gandhi)

1992 — Modified (Right to Education Act Article 21A added ) — (During the government of PV Narsimha Rao)

2020 — New NEP 2020 (Part 0f 2014 BJP Election Manifesto)

Vision :

1. To promote the concept of sustainable development

2. Develops a deep sense of respect towards the fundamental rights, duties, and Constitutional values

3. To make India as Global Knowledge Super Power

Key Highlights of NEP 2020 :

1. GER (Gross Enrollment Ratio) to be increased by 50% by 2035.

(It means the students moving from one class to another ie. to enroll more students throughout the process of education of students)

2. Education sector to get an investment of 6% of GDP instead of earlier 1.7%.

3. HRD (Human Resource Development) Ministry renamed as Ministry of Education.

4. MPhil (Master of Philosophy) to be discontinued.

5. National Curriculum Framework (NCF) will be introduced in school for teachers and adult education. NCF is basically is a set of plans and regulations to be followed to fulfill the needs of education.

6. The medium of Education can be Mother tongue or Home Tongue till 5th Std.

7. The government will set up HECI ( Higher Education Commission of India), a single overarching umbrella body for the entire higher education. (Excluding Medical and Law education)

8. Foreign universities can set up campuses in India.

9. Counselling System, Annual Health checkups will be introduced for students, suitable infrastructure development at schools to make access easier for children with disabilities.

10. Indian Sign Language (ISL) will be standardized across the country, and National and State curriculum materials developed, for use by students with hearing impairment.

11. Fee Criteria will be set up for schools.

Introduction of the New System of Education :

New System — 5 + 3 + 3 + 4

a) 5 years — Foundational Stage

· Pre-School (Age 3–6)

· Class 1 & 2 (Age 6–8)

b) 3 years — Preparatory Stage

· Class 3–5 (Age 8–11)

c) 3 years — Middle Stage

· Class 6–8 (Age 11–14)

d) 4 years — Secondary Stage

· Class 9–12 (Age 14–18)

Transforming the Learning Process :

1. Coding, vocational training (pottery, carpentry, etc), internships will be introduced in Class 6th to focus on skills

2. The makeover of report cards to enable 360-degree assessment of a student as it will include :

o Self-assessment

o Peer/Friends assessment

o Teacher assessment

3. Bagless days to be scheduled in the academic calendar

4. Board exams will be made ‘easier’, as they will test primarily core capacities/competencies

Introduction of MEME 😂 (Multiple Entry Multiple Exit) System for Higher Education:

For Under Graduate Program of 4 years following would be the scenario if a student drops out of the course at any stage of the incomplete course :

a) 1 year — — — — — — — — — — Certificate

b) 2 years — — — — — — — — — — Diploma Certificate

c) 3 years — — — — — — — — — — Bachelor Degree

d) 4 years — — — — — — — — — — Research Degree

Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) — To digitally store the academic credits in DigiLocker earned from various institutes and can be transferred when required.

ABC will avoid the fear of the wastage of years

High Point of NEP 2020 :

1. Hard Separation between Streams (Science, Commerce, Arts) will be abolished.

Eg: Students pursuing Science can take 1/2 subjects of ARTs if interested or Commerce students can take up one subject of Science.

(Pool System) But the exact formation of pools to be decided.

2. Sanskrit will be boosted as an optional language.

3. Curriculum content will be reduced in each subject to its core essentials in order to reduce the weight of textbooks.

Improving Teacher Education :

1. 4-year integrated B.Ed. — The minimum qualification degree for teaching will be a degree by 2030

2. Mandatory for every Ph.D. student to do a module on teacher education

3. Teacher Eligibility Tests (TETs) at all stages will be strengthened

4. National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) by 2022

5. Minimum 50 hours of in-service training per teacher/year

Other Initiatives :

1. PARAKH — Setting-up of National Center for Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic development in order to regulate norms, standards, and guidelines for assessment and evaluation

2. Expansion of existing e-learning platforms — DIKSHA, SWAYAM, etc.

3. Lok Vidya’, to be made accessible to students through integration into vocational education courses. Local artists, potters, carpenters as master instructors in schools which will boost employment.

NEPs golden statement “ There is no better investment towards a society ’s future than the high-quality education of our young people.

The NEP2020 will be a highly fruitful opportunity for students if implemented well systematically.
